Legendary Golfers Inspire The Next Generation

Legendary Golfers Inspire The Next GenerationThe Children’s Museum is honored to partner with legendary golfers Pete and Alice Dye to create a new golf experience for families as part of the 7.5-acre Riley Children’s Health Sports Legends Experience. The Pete and Alice Dye-designed Golf Experience presented by Henry and Christine Camferdam will encourage community health and wellness by bringing families together for fun physical activity.

Pete and Alice Dye, the dynamic force behind the experience, are two legendary figures in the world of golf. Alice Dye is known as the “First Lady” of golf architecture in the U.S. An Indianapolis native, she began playing golf at a young age, winning her first amateur golf championship at 19. Alice also served as the captain of the golf team at Rollins College in Florida, where she met her husband, Paul “Pete” Dye, Jr.

Pete Dye, a WWII veteran, was introduced to golf as a child by his father, who built a 9-hole golf course on their Ohio farm. He won several amateur golf championships growing up, including the Ohio State High School Championship and Indiana State Amateur Championship.

After marrying in 1950, Pete and Alice started a lifelong career as golf course architects, designing courses throughout the U.S., Dominican Republic, Israel, and Guatemala. Pete is considered to be one of the most influential golf course architects and is known by some as the father of modern golf architecture. By his side, Alice has crusaded to design courses appropriately challenging for women.

Now Pete and Alice Dye bring their expertise to The Children’s Museum. The course at the Sports Legends Experience is the Dye’s first mini-golf design. The experience will include a 9- and 18-hole course families can enjoy together—some parts even based on Pete’s most famous designs. Specialized equipment such as larger balls and clubs will be provided for the littlest golfers to join in the fun.

By introducing children to golf at a young age, Pete and Alice hope to foster a love for the sport that will impact families for generations to come. Watch this video to hear firsthand what legends Pete and Alice Dye have to say about bringing golf, fitness, and fun to Indiana families.
